چکیده
Dr. Frost has no relevant financial conflicts to disclose. C erebral oximetry has been studied for more than 30 years, and has been commercially available to clinicians for more than 2 decades. 1,2 However, whereas pulse oximetry has been a standard of care for decades, only recently has cerebral oximetry been extensively studied and adapted to investigate changes in oxygen delivery to the brain and how the monitor may be used as a " first alert " of impending organ dysfunction.

Forbidden Word Entropy of Cerebral Oximetric Values Predicts Postoperative Neurocognitive Decline in Patients Undergoing Aortic Arch Surgery under Deep Hypothermic Circulatory Arrest
PURPOSE Up to 53% of cardiac surgery patients experience postoperative neurocognitive decline. Cerebral oximetry is designed to detect changes in cerebral tissue saturation and therefore may be useful to predict which patients are at risk of developing neurocognitive decline. METHODS This is a retrospective analysis of a prospective study originally designed to determine if treatment of cereb...
متن کاملCerebral oximetry: a replacement for pulse oximetry?
Cerebral oximetry has been around for some 3 decades but has had a somewhat checkered history regarding application and reliability. More recently several monitors have been approved in the United States and elsewhere and the technique is emerging as a useful tool for assessing not only adequate cerebral oxygenation but also tissue oxygenation and perfusion in other organs.
متن کاملCerebral oximetry and stroke distance: the future of emergency department monitoring?
OBJECTIVE To illustrate the possible role of cerebral oximetry and stroke distance as measured by Doppler ultrasound in monitoring the critically ill patient non-invasively in the emergency department. METHODS Five critically ill patients were monitored with either cerebral oximetry or both cerebral oximetry and stroke distance (the distance travelled by blood in the aorta with each ventricul...
متن کاملThe Significance of Cerebral Oximetry Monitoring for Cardiovascular Surgery
reviews of publications dated pre-January 2004, they concluded that further investigation is needed to prove the clinical utility of NIRS in cardiac surgery. In the past few years, there have been new advances in NIRS technology and in clinical studies of cerebral oximetry in adult cardiovascular surgery. This review will focus on these recent developments and our experiences with cerebral oxim...
متن کاملIn vivo electron paramagnetic resonance oximetry and applications in the brain
Molecular oxygen (O2) is essential to brain function and mechanisms necessary to regulate variations in delivery or utilization of O2 are crucial to support normal brain homeostasis, physiology and energy metabolism. Any imbalance in cerebral tissue partial pressure of O2 (pO2) levels may lead to pathophysiological complications including increased reactive O2 species generation leading to oxid...
